What is a Comprehensive Master Plan?

The City of Medford launched a citywide Comprehensive Master Planning Process on June 9, 2021 that will result in a long-range vision for the City with policy and guidance for implementation of the Plan over the next ten years. 

The Comprehensive Master Planning process is expected to take approximately 12-18 months and the resulting Plan will provide a basis for decision-making about climate adaptation and mitigation practices, land use planning and redevelopment, budget preparation and capital improvement planning for public facilities and services. 

With the help of consultants Agency Landscape + Planning, in collaboration Innes Associates, Karp Strategies, Arup, and LANDAU Design+Technology, the City will place a large emphasis on public participation, using techniques designed to engage with a diverse population that is representative of Medford.

The City has released its final version of its Comprehensive Plan, a document that will guide Medford and help create a long-range vision for development and policy over the course of decades.

The plan engages seven core areas:

• land use
• housing
• economic development
• history, arts, and cultures
• open space and recreation
• public services
• mobility

These areas will be assessed under the themes of resilience, equity, and health. The plan will help guide City staff with policy decisions, future investments, regulatory changes, and ongoing community discussions.

The second of three virtual community meetings will be held on Wednesday, October 20^th at 6pm to discuss the City’s ongoing Comprehensive Planning process. Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee

A 21-person Steering Committee will guide the development of the Master Plan, along with the City’s selected consultant, Agency Landscape + Planning. The Steering Committee includes local business owners, planning professionals, parents and grandparents, Medford High School students, long-time residents and newer residents, City Council and Community Development Board members, a range of races and ethnicities, and representatives from different geographic areas of the City.

Committee members will meet approximately 6 times over the course of the 18-month planning process and will review drafts, provide input, and serve as a liaison between community groups and the planning team.
