Weights & Measures

About

For many years, local weights and measure’s officials have been working behind the scenes to protect consumers, businesses, and manufacturers from unfair practices. These individuals use highly accurate equipment to test scales, meters, scanning equipment and packaged products. They also inspect weighing and measuring equipment and packages at warehouses, packing plants, shipping companies, lumberyards and home improvement outlets, delis, supermarkets, and pharmacies. As well as inspecting gasoline, diesel dispensers and heating oil delivery truck meters. They act as a third party to help maintain fairness and keep the market place in balance.

Weights and Measures is everyone’s business. Consumers and businesses can both benefit and help their local Weights and Measures officials enforce the law and help keep a fair and equitable market place. One way is to look for the Weights and Measures Seal which is usually placed on weighing or measuring equipment showing that the equipment was tested and found correct. If you do not see one, contact your local Weights and Measures office.
