Meters

Installations are ongoing and will continue into the beginning of 2025. The installations are taking place in groups. Notices for scheduling appointments will therefore be mailed to each group at some point during the project’s duration.

The City is working with an installation contractor, Mass Installation Inc. (MII). All MII employees will have a photo ID badge and drive clearly-marked vehicles.

Notices will be mailed to each customer; examples are provided below. Upon receipt of the notice, you may schedule an appointment with MII through their website or toll-free phone number.

MII will attempt to arrange an appointment time that is convenient for you.

Please do not contact the City to schedule your appointment. If no response is received from attempted mailing efforts, MII technicians will canvass to request access by going door-to-door or via telephone call or email.

Please ensure that:

• The area around the water meter (minimum 5-foot radius) is accessible to the installer,
• Someone over the age of 18 will be at the property during the scheduled appointment time to allow installers inside to access the meter, and
• Dogs and other pets are secured throughout the installation process.

Standard installations will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Water service will be temporarily shut off to perform the installations. The installation technician will need access to your existing water meter (typically located in the basement) and your existing reading device/transmitter (typically located on the outside of homes/buildings). The technician will replace the meter and remove the reading device/transmitter, as well as the wiring connecting them. After completing the replacement, the technician will test the new meter. The technician will also be utilizing a tablet/electronic device to collect photographs and all data, such as meter serial numbers, old meter reading, water service size and material, etc.

The City has a two-decade old water meter reading system. The meters and equipment currently in use have reached the end of their life expectancy and need to be replaced to ensure accurate billing for the future.

A big advantage for the new system is that the meters are ultrasonic. The meter sends radio waves back and forth through the meter, measuring change in water flow. The new system has built in acoustic leak detection to discover excess water usage on water mains and services. This will drastically reduce water leakage throughout the City, bringing down the City’s unaccounted for water. The new meters are warrantied for a life of twenty years with no loss of accuracy, due to ultrasonic technology. The new meters will also work with the City’s Watersmart program that allows customers to view their usage online and be alerted of high usage and leaks. The new meters will be calling in hourly, giving Watersmart the additional data to make the system that much smarter at detecting leaks within homes for all residential customers in the City.

The meter is the property of the City of Medford and should not be tampered with. However, it is the responsibility of the customer to keep the water meter from freezing.

All existing meters and reading devices/transmitters will be removed from your property as part of the installation process and recycled.
