Budget Override Information

About

The Mayor, City Council leadership, School Committee leadership, and municipal staff, serving as the city’s Financial Task Force, released a proposal for voter consideration on the November 2024 general election ballot that included three proposition 2 1/2 ballot questions to raise revenue for city and school services and construction of a new Fire Headquarters:

  • two override questions totaling $7,500,000 in additional funding to be invested in the schools and City
  • one debt exclusion question to fund construction of  a new fire headquarters.

At its June 11 regular meeting, the City Council approved moving these three questions forward to appear as ballot questions in the November election.

Voters approved ballot question 7 and ballot question 8 on November 5, 2024, while ballot question 6 was rejected.

Each year, the City finalizes its property assessments in January.  Since the City’s fiscal year runs from July 1 through June 30, the property tax bills for the first two quarters (tax bills due August 1 and November 1) are estimated bills.  Once the assessment for the year has been completed in January, the tax bills for the 3rd and 4th quarters (tax bills due February 1 and May 1) include any additional increase in taxes due for the entire year.

This year your new bills for February 1 and May 1 will include any standard increase in your tax bill based on the regular annual tax levy and the assessed value of your home, plus the increased tax for the overrides covering the full year from July 1 through June 30.
