Reminder to Fill Out and Return Census to Remain an Active Voter
The 2026 Annual City Street Listing/Census has been mailed to all households in Medford and the City is urging residents to fill out the form and return it to City Hall. Please review the instructions on your form, sign it, and return to the Election Commission by mail at 85 George P. Hassett Drive, Medford MA 02155 or leave it in the blue drop box outside City Hall.
Your response to the annual census helps the Election Commission keep the voter list accurate and up to date, as well as keeps your voter status “active” for elections.
Voters who do not respond to the census will become “inactive” on the voter list and receive a Confirmation Postcard in June. Becoming inactive on the voter list delays your voting experience at the next election. Massachusetts state law requires that all inactive voters at the polls provide an ID matching the name and address printed on the voter list, as well as fill out and sign an affirmation. Voters who continually fail to return their annual census may have their name removed from the voting list.
If you need to make changes to the information on your census, please review the instructions on your form, sign, and return to the Election Commission. Don’t forget to sign your form - the voter’s signature is required to make any changes to the voter registration, including party changes.
The Election Commission is required by state statute to verify and update the name, address, age, and occupation of all residents in preparation for the Annual Street List/Census. Compliance with this state requirement provides proof of residence to protect voting rights, veterans’ bonus, housing for the elderly, and other related benefits.
