Next Phase of Carr Park Renovations Beginning February 10

Next Phase of Carr Park Renovations Beginning February 10

The City will begin its second phase of renovations to Carr Park on Monday, February 10, Mayor Breanna Lungo- Koehn announced. During these renovations, certain areas of the park will be closed to the public.

Starting February 10, the tennis and basketball court areas, the northeast corner of the central fields, and a portion of the loop path will be closed to the public. Temporarily closing a portion of the loop path is necessary because the Contractor needs to be able to move materials and equipment between Winslow Avenue and the location of the new dog park. Once the dog park is complete, both it and the closed portion of the loop path will be open to the public. The playground will remain open to the public until the first week of April. The pickleball courts and a majority of the loop path will remain open to the public throughout construction and the central fields will be re-opened in May.

“As we work on the massive Carr Park renovation that will create an accessible and sustainable green space, we thank residents for their cooperation and patience,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “We are excited to begin this next phase of renovations in the winter. Thank you to Congresswoman Katherine Clark for helping to secure the funding to make this project possible and to our team in the Planning, Development and Sustainability office and Department of Public Works for managing and coordinating this massive renovation project.”

By starting this winter, the City hopes to be able to open the dog park early this summer. Work on the area of the park with the existing playground, tennis, and basketball courts may continue until winter 2026.

Phase II of the renovation will include an accessible four-season playground, integrated water play features, a shaded central plaza, a dog park, repurposed boulders and removed debris from the woodland for decor and natural play, a mini skatepark, an adult fitness area, one open-air basketball court, and one basketball court covered with a shade structure that with installed solar panels, interpretive signage discussing solar energy and climate resilient features at the park, accessible seating and picnic tables, drinking fountains and a bottle filler, pedestrian lighting, and maintenance of existing trees and planting of new trees and shrubbery.

This phase is funded by a Land and Water Conservation Fund Grant, Community Preservation Act funding, ARPA funding, and a federal earmark through the Department of Energy with help from Representative Katherine Clark.

Phase I, which partially opened to the public in July 2024, included an accessible path that circles the entire park field, reconstruction of two baseball diamonds, a woodland area cleanup and invasive plant removal, fully dedicated pickleball courts, and more.
