Medford Secures Grant to Add On-Street Electric Vehicle Chargers

The City has secured a new electric vehicle (EV) charging program grant through the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC), announced Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn. The MassCEC On-Street Charging Program was designed to accelerate equitable access to EV charging solutions in municipalities. 

The MassCEC On-Street Charging Program looks to reduce barriers to electric vehicle adoption for renters and residents without a dedicated driveway, garage, or parking space. MassCEC has partnered with Commonwealth Electrical Technologies and Leidos to support 36 municipalities through one of two pathways: Feasibility Studies and Planning Support or Project Implementation. Medford is in the project implementation phase. 

The City gathered information on EV charging needs through a survey released in June 2025. Thirty-two percent of survey respondents said that they don’t have an electric vehicle but would get one if there was a convenient charger nearby.  

Based on consultant analysis and these resident survey responses, these chargers will be installed at Magoun Park, Barry Park, Morrison Park, and one other location to be determined. Installations will occur during fall or early winter 2025. 

Through the program, municipalities that are ready for installation will receive EV charging stations and associated technical assistance at no cost. These will be level 2 charging stations, which are most useful for people that live or work in the area and already spend 3-4 hours in that location.  

“Access to EV chargers is a barrier for residents without a dedicated parking space, something that especially affects our renters and small businesses,” said Mayor Lungo-Koehn. “While we already have 11 level 2 charging stations in parking lots around the city, these on-street solutions will be a game-changer for residents looking to make the switch to electric vehicles.
