Medford Receives “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award” for Fiscal Year 2025 Municipal Budget

The City has received its second “Distinguished Budget Presentation Award” from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for the Fiscal Year 2025 municipal budget, Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn announced. The Finance Department and Communications department, along with the Chief of Staff, compiled the application materials and submitted the FY25 budget for consideration in September 2024, and the GFOA awards were announced in November 2024. The City had previously won the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2021 budget.

According to the GFOA, the award “represents a significant achievement” by a municipality that “reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting.”

“This is a tremendous accomplishment and shows that our financial accounting practices and priorities that are the foundation for our budget process are sound and transparent,” Mayor Lungo-Koehn said. “The criteria set by GFOA for the applications process is stringent and requires much preparation and diligent work. I am incredibly proud of our Finance Department, Communications team and our Chief of Staff for helping craft this budget and submitting the application materials that won the award.”

According to the GFOA, by winning this prestigious award, the City of Medford has “pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.”

“Compiling the FY25 budget took hundreds of hours of work across several months and involved the participation of multiple staff and all department heads,” Assistant Finance Director/Budget Manager Courtney Cardello said. “It’s so rewarding to see this effort recognized by the GFOA with this award. Thank you to our Finance Department staff and the Mayor’s office for working so hard to achieve this momentous goal.”
