Medford Community Electricity Aggregation Secures Lower Rate Through December 2027

The City of Medford announces the renewal of its Medford Community Electricity Aggregation (Medford CEA) program, with new prices for the period December 2024 through December 2027. Medford CEA is a group purchasing program operated by the City that provides electricity supply options to help residents and businesses manage costs and increase renewable energy use. The program has saved residents more than $11 million and purchased more than 5,000 MWh of renewable energy each year. Current participants do not need to take any action to remain in the Medford CEA program and receive the new pricing.

The City has secured lower prices for all supply options from the previous contract, while also increasing the amount of renewable energy in the default option, Medford Local Green. This option will now provide an additional 10% new, renewable energy from New England (also known as MA Class I RECs).

All new Medford CEA prices will be fixed for 36 months, from December 2024 through December 2027. The Medford CEA Program will be served by a new supplier, Direct Energy.

The majority of residents, over 14,000 accounts in the City, use the Medford Local Green option. This product’s amount of additional locally sourced renewable energy (also known as MA Class I RECs) has increased from 5% to 10% starting in December 2024.

You may switch to another Medford CEA option at any time. To switch options, call our program’s current electricity supplier, Next Era Services, at (877) 960-8880, or submit a request at MedfordCEA.com.

No action is necessary to receive the new pricing for your current Medford supply option, if listed above. For example, if you currently use Medford Basic, you will automatically receive the new price for Medford Basic listed above.

To check what Medford CEA supply option you currently use, look at the Supply section of your National Grid electricity bill. If you participate in the program, it will include the “Old Price” listed above.

New prices take effect on your December 2024 meter read, which is on December 13 for most of the community. The first bill to show the new Medford CEA pricing will be the bill you receive showing usage from your December 2024 to January 2025 meter read. Most customers can expect to receive this bill in mid-January 2025.

The City’s current electricity contract has offered fixed prices since December 2022, which has saved about $600 for the typical Medford Local Green residential customer over that time, while also providing an additional 5% locally sourced green energy from New England. City-wide, the program has had a major environmental impact, purchasing 5200 megawatt hours (MWh) annually, which avoids over 3.9 million pounds of carbon pollution each year.

As a reminder, Medford CEA prices only apply to the supply portion of your electric bill and take effect on your meter read date. National Grid and Eversource will continue to set the charges on the Delivery portion of your electric bill and will repair outages and manage all billing. Medford CEA has no impact on any solar benefits, low-income discounts, or budget billing plans. Income-eligible customers of National Grid and Eversource can enjoy discounts of 32% and 42% on their total electricity bill, respectively, while also benefiting from the Medford CEA rates mentioned above. You can find links to sign up for this discount at MedfordCEA.com.

If you are not currently participating in Medford CEA, you can join any time. To join, submit a request at MedfordCEA.com. The City of Medford encourages residents to opt up to the 100% option to support Massachusetts' clean energy goals.

Medford CEA participants may leave the program at any time without penalty and return to Basic Service supply with National Grid or Eversource. To leave the program, call National Grid at (800) 322-3223 or Eversource at (800) 592-2000, or submit a request at MedfordCEA.com
