Educational Programs

‘Kids on the Block’ Puppets

These puppets, approximately the size of 4 year old children, come with explaining; Blindness, Down Syndrome, Spina Bidfida, Cerebral Palsy, and Learning Disabilities. Each disability script has up to four different ‘scenes’ that take approximately 10 minutes each to conduct. Students, in pairs, conduct this program in elementary classrooms, usually grades 1-4. The script explains the disability by using every day scenarios, and explains that the child with a disability is just like you & me, but just does things a little differently. This nationally renowned program uses positive educational opportunities to create empathy and understanding, not sympathy. This program has over the years received rave reviews and evaluations from teachers and students in Medford since we started it in 1995. Over the years, this program has been conducted by Medford High School Students, Parents, Volunteers, and Tufts University Students.

‘Understanding Our Differences’

This program has fourth grade students learn, understand and experience what it is like to have a particular disability by going through several activities that simulate the experience. There are six components to the program; Blindness/Visual Impairments, Deafness and Hard of Hearing, Developmental Disabilities, Special Medical Conditions (Asthma, Diabetes, Epilepsy), Learning Disabilities, and Physical Disabilities. We currently have the capability of conducting the Blindness and Hearing Impairment Segments. The program consists of two segments which take approximately 1 ½ – 2 hours each to conduct.
