This is the Medford Fire Department Chief John Freedman with some important information to help you stay safe this holiday weekend.
As we head into the Independence Day Holiday it is critical to your health and the health of those around you that you refrain from setting off fireworks in your neighborhood.
All Fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts. This includes sparklers, firecrackers, and cherry bombs. Fireworks pose great dangers to the public when not used correctly by professionals and can lead to damaging events. Risks include serious injury, property damage, explosions, and fires.
The Fourth of July is a busy time for firefighters. We are supervising professional fireworks shows and responding to fires and medical emergencies. The week of July 4th is one of the busiest times of the year for fires. Firefighters, police officers, and medical professionals ask you to help us. Leave fireworks to the professionals.
So please be safe this holiday weekend and celebrate our country’s independence responsibly.
Thank you.

Hello,
This is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with an important reminder about parking during snow storms, how to get help shoveling your driveway and walkway, signing up for our newsletter, and an exciting announcement about the launch of our new City website.
If you were not able to catch my state of the city address on Wednesday, you can visit medfordma.org to watch it.
We’ve had a few minor snow events so far this winter and have yet to call a snow emergency. But the winter is still here, so in case we do so in the near future, here’s what you need to know. In the event of a snow emergency, you must park your car on the even side of the street since this winter began in an even year. Additionally, if we decide to call a snow emergency, we do so well enough in advance so you can prepare. We will send out a robo call, press release, and post on the City website and on social media.
Also, if you’re in need of help shoveling snow. Please visit medfordma.org/snow to see who is available in your area to help.
In addition to sending out alerts, we also communicate through a City newsletter, so I encourage you sign up for that as well. Visit https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/su/PEVmlvy to sign up.
And lastly, it is my pleasure to announce that after many months of hard work by our team at City Hall, we will be launching our newly designed website this Monday, January 30. The new site is much more user friendly, it improves functionality and accessibility, allows us to communicate and engage in a more dynamic way, and is also translated into 4 languages. I hope you check out the new design on Monday!
Thank you and have a great weekend!

Also, now with the approval of booster shots for everyone ages 12 and up, the City’s Board of Health is holding a Bivalent Omicron Booster Shot clinic on Wednesday, September 28 at the Council on Aging from 3pm to 6pm. This is such a great event with amazing food, live music, games for the whole family and wonderful local vendors.
Hope to see you there!

This is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with an important reminder about the upcoming Orange and Green Line closures, and a COVID-19 update.
In case you are not aware, the MBTA has announced that the Orange Line will completely shut down from Oak Grove station to Forest Hills station for 30 days beginning this Friday, August 19 at 9 p.m., to do construction and maintenance work, with a reopening date of Sunday, September 18. The Green Line will shut down for 28 days from Union Square to Government Center stations beginning Monday, August 22. Also, the MBTA has announced that the planned Green Line Extension stops in Medford, originally scheduled to begin operating this summer, will not open until late November.
State officials have said that these closures will have a huge impact on our community and lead to more congestion on our streets, fewer public transit options for our commuters and longer wait times at our stations.
The MBTA is urging people to work from home if possible but for many however, that is not an option, so state officials are advising that residents devote additional time for their commute. To help assist with travel planning, the MBTA released a rider guide that outlines shuttle service pickup/drop off areas, T connection points and other alternate options. The guide is available on our website at medfordma.org, at MBTA.com or by clicking here.
I know this will be a huge disruption for all of our residents and I am in constant communication with the MBTA, advocating for smart solutions like dedicated bus lanes and express bus service. I will continue to push for better alternatives and hope the MBTA understands just how major of an inconvenience this is for Medford and the surrounding cities.
I also want to remind you that in preparation for the upcoming school year, the City’s Board of Health is hosting a vaccine and booster shot clinic for people ages 5 and up on Wednesday, August 24 at the Council on Aging from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome from 3pm to 4pm but registration is preferred. Visit medfordma.org to register (or click here) and if you’re getting a booster shot or a second shot, please remember to bring your vaccination card with you.
Thank you.

This is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with an update on the heatwave and COVID-19.
The City has cooling centers open this weekend for those who are looking for some relief from the weather. The Council on Aging is open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The community room at the Medford Police station is open 24 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday. Each location is stocked with water and health safety information.
For more info on how to stay safe during a heatwave, visit medfordma.org.
Also, Medford, like many cities and towns across the country, is seeing an increase in positive covid cases. We are currently sitting at 7.6 percent, an increase of over one percentage point from this time last month. While this is concerning, we have many more tools at our disposal to protect our community and reduce the more harmful effects of the virus.
We are planning to hold a vaccine and booster shot clinic in mid-August for everyone ages 12 and up. Details of the clinic, including the date, time and location are still being finalized and we will communicate those in the very near future. We are also working with the school department to set up clinics for students in the fall.
If you need an appointment now, visit vaxfinder.mass.gov.
Additionally, the City has secured 10,000 rapid test kits and has been distributing them at locations throughout the city, including:
· The West Medford Community Center
· Mystic Valley Market
· Council on Aging
· Medford Public Library
· Medford Housing Authority
· And City Hall
Each kit consists of two tests and there is a limit of two kits per person. If you need help acquiring a kit, please call our multilingual resource line at 781-475-5644.
Have a great weekend!
July 8 2022
This is Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn with a few summer updates.
First I’d like to invite everyone to come celebrate Clippership Day with us on Saturday, July 16 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. This is a wonderful event that the Chamber puts on every year. Clippership Drive shuts down and vendors and activities line the Square for the afternoon.
With the summer getting underway and more people outside eating and drinking, it’s important to stay mindful of the environment and to pick up after yourselves. Food garbage attracts unwanted rodents and we have to all do our part to keep our community clean. Please also check outside of your home to make sure there are no water or food sources.
Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone that the City has secured 10 thousand COVID-19 Rapid Test kits for our low-income residents and are distributing them to the public at several locations throughout the community, including:
· The West Medford Community Center
· Mystic Valley Market
· Council on Aging
· Medford Public Library
· Medford Housing Authority
· And City Hall, Room 303
Each kit consists of two tests and there is a limit of two kits per person. If you need help acquiring a kit, please call our multilingual resource line at 781-475-5644.
Have a great weekend!

Yesterday was the last weekly vaccine and booster shot clinics at City Hall for now. Over the past several weeks the staff at the Board of Health have given out hundreds of doses of the vaccine. As we work to secure more doses to set up more clinics, our team is still ready and available to help you register for a vaccine or booster shot at other clinics around the City. Now with the weather warming up, we’re getting ready to unveil our newly renovated basketball courts at Playstead Park and Barry Park. So please join us for a ribbon cutting and knockout tournament at Barry Park on Wednesday, May 11 at 4 p.m., and at Playstead Park on Wednesday, May 18 at 4 p.m.
In addition to the basketball courts, we’re also doing a major art project at LoConte Rink. I stopped by earlier this week to get a sneak peek at the progress of the new inclusive murals designed and painted by local artist Jamie Chan. I cannot wait for everyone to see the finished project.
We’re also in the process of planning our Memorial Day Ceremony for Monday, May 30. We’ll have more details for you soon but I hope you can make it and help us honor and remember our service members.
Thank you, and have a great weekend!
