Mayor Michael J. McGlynn announced today that the City of Medford has received a $1,468,080.00 Fire SAFER grant from the federal government which will be used to hire eight firefighters, covering both salaries and benefits for two years. These firefighters will serve for two years at no cost to taxpayers. These eight positions are in addition to the seven positions that were just hired today.
“I would like to acknowledge Fire Chief Frank Giliberti for his outstanding efforts in putting together and submitting this grant to the federal government. He did a great job in helping us to secure this funding for our fire department,” said Mayor McGlynn.
The goal of the SAFER grant is to enhance the ability of grantees to attain and maintain 24-hour staffing and to assure that their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. The objective of the program is to award grants directly to volunteer, combination and career fire departments to help the departments increase the number of frontline firefighters.
“Public safety has always been a top priority of my administration and now that we have turned the corner, financially, we are in the process of working to rebuild the ranks of the Medford Police and Fire Departments. The first week of December, six police officers are expected to graduate from the Police Academy. We are currently in the process of hiring four additional police officers,” said the Mayor.
