Mayor Michael McGlynn presented keys to the city to five people who helped save a young girl from drowning at Wrights Pond: Emmanuel Trapella and his 12-year-old daughter Sky and friend Sophia Bendok, 11, and lifeguards and Medford High School seniors Jaquieson Xavier and Desiree Savoia.
On August 17, 2012, while enjoying the day swimming at Wrights Pond, Sky and Sophia noticed 3-year-old Semrawit Ghebrelul on the bottom of the pond and immediately pulled her up and alerted Emmanuel. Emmanuel and the lifeguards ran over and carried Semrawit out of the water and began CPR. Their heroic efforts and quick-thinking saved this young child’s life.
“The actions of these individuals saved this child’s life and these young girls took it upon themselves to do the right thing and help a stranger in a time of dire need. This is not something that happens everyday. They should all be commended and applauded for their lifesaving efforts,” said Mayor McGlynn.
